The study for the painting was done quite quickly in about an hour but the painting was done over a week. I'm pleased with it and feel it represents my current interests, derived from my own sketchbook drawing and ideas about painting. The title "Evenlode" is from the name of the river that runs through the valley in Oxfordshire where my parents live. It's also the name of a William Morris fabric design.
I visited the Ashmolean again - this time with school - and was able to make these drawings. The museum is simply magnificent. Click image for a larger view.
I have been making quite a lot of drawings from landscape recently - these are all from observation from a moving coach. I've also been posting sketchbook work on a blog with my daughter over at drawtwo.
This drawing was based on the walk we made across the snowy fields.
The fruit cages, supports and dried canes provide such visually strong structures against the white flatness of the snow, which makes the photos below look like drawings
